I've been obsessed with fig trees. When we arrived here, there were no figs on the trees. They were in a state of dropping their leaves. I would scan each tree that I was near to with my eyes in hope of seeing one waiting there for me even though it's not fig season until June.
The Bible speaks about fig trees, from Genesis through Revelation. One of the in most famous scriptures is when Jesus cursed the fig tree that did not bear fruit, but the scripture that sings in my heart when I see the fig tree is from the book of Habbukuk. Something about it reminds me of how some people are experiencing 2020, but then, there is hope!
Habakkuk 3:17-18
"Though the fig tree should not blossom
And there be no fruit on the vines,
Though the yield of the olive should fail
And the fields produce no food,
Though the flock should be cut off from the fold
And there be no cattle in the stalls,
Yet I will exult in the Lord,
I will rejoice in the God of my salvation."
This week I saw a fig tree with beautiful, healthy young leaves and I got excited in seeing this transformation. It gives me hope and I had a deep knowing that everything will be okay, just as the young leaves tell us that summer is coming. In all circumstances, I continue to praise my God.
